Hi dear friends and family!
I will try and keep you posted here on this blog - and it is entirely up to you whether you can be bothered to read it or not
After spending a few days in Panamá with good friends, I landed in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia early Friday morning, grabbed a taxi to my hotel en Getsemaní - a neighborhood I knew from my stay here with Cilie in March this year. Fantastic to be back! So friendly people, all smiles and very helpful.
I'd promised myself a cold beer at Donde Fidel's - one cold beer and no more. But alas how blue eyed can a girl be! Donde Fidel is more than anything a salsa bar and only just managed to stagger home on my sore legs at 5 a.m. But Saturday was house hunting day. Cartagena is not particularly cheap and the hotel room was no less than a dungeon with a temperature of around 50 degrees centigrades. This certainly boosted my motivation.
I rented a bike - need I say that he bike renter is now a friend - and talked to a lot of people who went out our their way to help me. An older man took me round to 3 places, two had already been let out and one was with a family with small children and only one bathroom to share, so that too was a no-go. I also ran into PG - a Swede who is now a neighbor like two houses down the road.
So I am now sharing a flat with two other people - one being the sister of the owner who is here less than half the time and the guy I haven't met yet. I have a small but nice room and my private bathroom. Kitchen and living room we share and the house has a porter so it's gonna work fine.
The location however is not fantastic - on both sides of the house there is a busy road but if you do survive crossing the one in front of the house right there is the ocean. And - did I mention I bought a second hand bike from my new friend? Shopping facilities are a mere 5 min away on bike just inside the Walled City. A night the neighborhood is a little dodgy so if I go out I'll have to take a taxi which cost the equivalent of two beers. I still need to work out the local transportation system but that's another story.
At least I am settled and ready for my job hunt. I still teach per Skype 4 lessons a week in Vilnius and once a week I volunteer on the most fantastic project in Rio de Janeiro but it doesn't pay my bills, so hunt is on!
Take care all!
