Taken from a little booklet picked up in our hotel called, "Staying Alive in the Arctic - A Collection of Anecdotes, Facts and Lies about life in Alaska!"
Exhaust from cars, even though it is 250 degrees when it comes out of a vehicle, cools to -40 in less than 10 seconds. (Exhaust is a major contributor to "ice fog").
Dry snow, at 40 below is cold enough to prevent skis from gliding. (The air is so cold it prevents friction between the ski and the snow, thus eliminating any chance of melt-water which makes a ski glide.)
At 40 below, a train that is more than 5 miles away will sound as if it is just down the street because of temperature inversion. (The inversion, created when warm air rests on top of colder air, acts as a tunnel in which sound waves bounce for great distances.)
The Fairbanks North Star Borough has no official temperature cut-off, so school is rarely closed due to cold weather.
At 45 degrees below, keys can snap off in door locks, and fan belts can disintegrate.
"Square tyres" are a natural phenomena in the winter. At sub-zero temperatures, a car that has been parked for more than an hour will have tyres that are flat on one side - where the tyre meets the ground. The tyres usually round back out within a mile of driving.
you can actually break your hair off by walking outside with wet hair at 40 below.
You're in Alaska if...
You pick your nose and pull out an ice cube!
What you think are fireflies are actually Mosquitos with landing lights!
You know which leaves make the best toilet paper!
You don't have to pay any state income taxes!
you get your summer clothes out when the temperature reaches 35 degrees!
