With our padi courses completed 2 days before our Thai visa ran out we decided we should get to Malaysia a day before expiry. Getting off the ferry at krabi a driver checked our ticket and said to stand over there pointing at a pillar, another 4 guys came over and also pointed us in the direction of other pillars. As it turns out the first guy was our driver!!! He drove like a lunatic keeping the lunacy standard high for van drivers across Thailand, Maz has developed the art of keeping her eyes closed but not falling asleep, mainly because she has to put up with Ryan's muttering for 4 hours. We were dropped off in a hat Yai to get the next bus to Penang. Another cramped mini van ride we crossed the boarder with ease. Arriving in Penang we picked a hotel and headed towards it, the guy outside the hostel we got dropped at didn't seem to understand no thanks after 7 attempts he eventually gave up trying to show us a room, or probably because some other people turned up!!
We didn't stay in Penang long enough to explore it properly but we found the shopping centre and the red garden food court. We enjoyed red garden a lot, pick what you want and them people bring out beer to you, so with 2 days in Malaysia we'd eaten Japanese and Philapino food. The food was amazing and ridiculously cheep and there was a great atmosphere. The place was always busy and buzzing and after 8pm we had musical entertainment too. Well it was more like professional karaoke, they were using the words and there was a major panic when the fan blew some of the song sheets off stage!!! They sang some well known songs, so we could sing along....well so Maz sang along and Ryan sat rolling his eyes.
We didn't really spend much time in Penang as we thought we should have but with the guide books only giving so much info and our onward flight to oz getting closer we decided to head to the capital, Kuala Lumpur.
As usual we got dumped some where in the middle of the city with the afternoon heat to contend with. We eventually found a cheap hotel that looked as if it used to be an office block . It was comfortable though. We opted not to do the views from the Petronas towers or the KL tower, it's too hazy so the views of the capital wouldn't have been so great and the entrance fees were high. We instead chose to go shopping and visit KL bird world.
Getting around the city we used to monorail system, so cheap and so efficient but you had to barge your way off the train as people trying to get on stand in the door way........really helpful!!!!.
Bird world was amazing. It's the worlds largest aviary with smaller pods and large cages. Some birds are scared of people however the peacocks just want to steal your ice cream. One in particular also wanted to eat Ryan's shoelaces.
We also stopped to have our photos taken with some birds. The Macau's were more interested in our entrance wrist bands than having their photos taken, We found it amusing.
We entered the parakeet enclosure, the bird attendant left his post the they didn't take took long breaking into the milk jug and getting their fix. It was also funny when they would look through the holes in floor planks, all the birds took an interest.
Ryan has decided that he'd like a Macau to go dog, cat, duck, bearded dragons and sheep, quite literally a zoo.
We then went to watch the bird show, although it was aimed at kids, the music wasn't thought. Maz in particular, got very excited and shouted along!
We didn't do the city justice and decided to book a ticket to Palau Tiomen in the south china sea. As we now have the diving bug it has completely changed our plans and temple bashing has gone out the window
