With views to Everest on the right and red wine at 11am, it was a pleasant flight from Bhutan back to Dhaka.
The CNG (auto-rickshaw) as shown above, was horrendous as usual but at least I now had a mask to protect my lungs from the pollution.
Although I had a card with a map on the back it was a drama finding the Viator Guest House in the Banani district of Dhaka. Never sure if it is a ploy to make a bit extra. It felt so hot and muggy after Bhutan.
Checked in but had to change rooms as I could see it would be noisy and then it was better.
Took CNG to Bushandhara where there is a huge modern shopping mall where I had bought my salwar kameez 4 weeks ago and I had spotted some ornate mirrors I wanted to buy as presents.
Bushandhara was where there had been some protesting the day before so I checked first if it was safe and had been told it would be OK.
Had a good look around. Many shops selling bling and fancy materials. Also all the mobile phone shops. I bought a protective screen cover for the IPhone and they carefully wiped all the dust off and put the cover on for me for a couple of quid.
The best was up near the top floor. There are many fast food restaurants where they pester you to eat. Eventually I succumbed and had a most delicious meal for only £2. It was a masala dosa. There was a 2 ft wide thin crispy rolled up pancake like dosa with potatoes inside and 5 tasty side dishes.
The CNG ride back made me decide not to go around old Dhaka the next day as I had planned -it is just too hairy. I was carrying 3 mirrors I had bought and was lucky to get them back in one piece.
This morning at breakfast I was speaking with a Canadian man. He told me that he was here to support a hospital which deals with women who have suffered acid attacks. A hospital just for acid attacks! Although legislation has improved, the perpetrators can often buy their way out. The victims are often ostracised in their villages.
