Barisal to Hularhat on rocket again. This time a slightly posher version and was proudly told it was the one that Michael Palin travelled on. The third class ticket cost less than 50p and I went straight up to the first class deck and rested my head on the table until breakfast of omelette and sweet bread half toasted. A Scottish couple Andy and Alison who been working in America came and joined and we had a good chat as they have been travelling around Asia for two months.
It was a pretty journey past villages and palm trees but quite hazy.
After 4hours we arrived in Hularhat where I took a rickshaw to the bus stand. I was told to get on a bus that was just about to depart. Luckily I double checked if it was going to Bagerhat and no, it was going to Kulna. Quickly got off and found the correct bus going to Bagerhat with its famous mosques and mausoleums built in 15c in green tranquil settings. The main one was the multidomed Shait Gumbad mosque which has 66 domes.
As I walked round the back I heard my name called and it was Dennis and Janet sitting beside the peaceful lake. A young boy spoke with us and later the family. So many seem to be highly professionals, surgeons or lawyers. Another family approached me and tried very hard for me to stay with them. I had already booked the Western Inn in Kulna. Then they wanted me to go with them I agreed thinking they had a car but it meant us all getting on an already crowded bus. I don't understand why people want you to stay with them. It isn't for money. Then they hired a little CNG for us all. I said no and went on the bus with Dennis and Janet. However full the bus is they somehow always make room for you.
At Kulna after the usual haggling with prices, shared an electrified auto rickshaw to our respective hotel.
I found the Western Inn alright but a little pretentious. Was shown large room and told a much higher price than I had been quoted. Oh you want a single room! How many of me do you see? Take me to the single room. OK you can have this at single price. Strong smell of moth balls but clean. Cost £14.
