Well I've finally got round to writing my blog! Will def make more of an effort. But I suppose its a good sign as we havn't had chance to spend to long on "t'internet".
So let me case my mind back 3 weeks ago to when we arrived in Hong Kong......
My first impression of Hong Kong was not a good one! We were welcomed with a typhoon, which dampened our spirits a little (nope im not going to pardon the pun! i did it on purpose and proud lol!) There was me expecting non stop sunshine for the next 9 months, and it couldn't even humour me for a few days! We were shattered as we arrived 7 in the morning Hong Kong time, or 1 in the morning UK time, but in a bid to combat the jet lag we decided to stay awake until an acceptable bedtime. We wandered around Kowloon where we were staying. I thought it was a bit shabby looking, lots of scruffy high rise buildings - not like the chic ones on hong kong island that we would see later in out trip. There were lots of little shops selling electronics and chinese medicines with pushy men saying "copy watch, copy handbag, taxi?" every 10 seconds.
We decided to get some food, so went to a restaurant which looked full of asian people - a good sign, or so we thought. We followed the waitress through the busy restaurant, further and then out into a back room with strip lighting and empty carboard boxes! The waitress brought us some tea in plastic cups, which is served free in most restaurants in Hong Kong, and topped up throughout your meal. I excitidly ordered sweet and sour pork - anyone who knows me, knows that my fave chinese meal is sweet and sour chicken! But they didnt have chicken so pork would do. When it came though i had a bit of a shock - as i took a bite and sudenly had my mouth full of battered bone and gristle! bleugh!
We went back to our room and i conked (sp?) out by 7! We didnt wake up until 2 in the afternooon the following day lol!
I can't remember exact sequence of events after that but I do remember that turning point for me and my opinion of Hong Komg was day three, when the weather brightened up and we went to Disney! Such a fantastic day. It was quite quiet so we didn't have to queue at all! Wer packed so much in, including 3 shows. One was the Lion King and I think it was better than the west end show!
Highlights of the trip include seeing the sky line of Hong Kong Island. I've never thought that I was a person who enjoyed sights really, but I was very impressed by the buildings and neon lights. Every night at 8 they have a laser show too, which makes it look even more special. We also went up to the peak, a nearby hill, in tram and looke down over Hong Kong.
We were in Hong Kong for the Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival. Monday night we saw a show of dancing, singing, martial arts and magic, and Wednesday was the dragan festival which was bizarre! A dragon made of thousands of burning insence sticks was carried through the streets of an area of Hong Kong. Hoards of people chased it round for just under an hour, trying to take pictures.
Another highlight for me was a meal we had on Hong Kong Island. The first chance I'd had to have my beloved sweet and sour chicken! And it was delish! The restaurant was busy so we were sat opposite a chinese lady and got chatting. We descovered that she had been to the UK and asked her what she thought. She said "hmmm...it was ok...but so much bread!" Me and Han thought this was very funny as since arriving in Hong Kong we were craving bread as we were geting fed up of rice and strong sauces!
We found out that the Hong Kong tourist board is pretty good and lays on loads of free classes for tourists - chinese tea appreciation class, feung shui, cookery etc but unfortunatly they were all fully booked the week we were there. However one class that we could attend was tai chi! One morning at 8 oclock we went to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre area which overlooks the harbour and the skyline of Hong Kong Island, and took part in the class. The man teaching us reminded me of Mr Miagi from Karate Kid! He was about 70 and had a wise air about him lol! But he was really flexible and nimble and he put us to shame! Me and Han really enjoyed the experience, but went home straight after because I had to have a nap lol!
Right well think that sums up Honk Kong really. After a shaky start I did start to like Hong Kong, but I think best to visit for just a few days, stay on Hong Kong Island and take plenty of money to for all the designer shops! Victoria Beckham would be in heaven there!
