Night bus, night bus, night bus... the only way to travel! We arrived at Ica around 6am and took a taxi straight to the small town of Huacachina. It's a small oasis town surrounded by huge sand dunes. The main attraction of the town is effcetively a V8 engine strapped to a roll cage. This is then filled with gringos (white tourists) and belted around the sand dunes. So much fun!
We also had a go at sand surfing. Imagine lying on a piece of plywood going down a near vertical piece of sandpaper, fun times until a knee or elbow slips off the edge! I like to think of it as exteme exfoliation!
Whilst there we met a couple, one of whom was peruvian. From this point onwards they would become our tour guides and show us a couple of things tourists normally don´t see. We started off that night by drinking a couple bottles of the cheapest wine Peru had to offer then heading to a local club. We were the only tourists in the club and the only white people so Nick and I decided to show them how to dance! Lets just say my salsa moves did not fail to impress.......
The following morning we got a lift to Lima courtisy of our new tour guide (thanks again) where we stayed for the night. We didn´t stop in Lima, just stayed overnight and got a bus out the next day to Huaraz.
One we arrived we went straight to book a four day hike in the Cordillera Blanca. We were advised to aclimitise to the altitude for 3 days before starting so we lied a bit and said we´d been there a while, what's the worst that could happen..... It turns out dizzyness and sickness.
Hiking in the Cordillera Blanca is said to be some of the best treks in all the americas. I´d 100% agree. The views were stunning. Snow topped mountains and the bluest lakes you've ever seen. I've put some new photos on facebook. Unfortunately sharing a one man tent with my brother is not one of the best experiences in South America!
It turns out when camping at high alititude surrounded by mountains the sun sets at 6pm. Its suprising how early you can go to bed when sat in darkness in the freezing cold!
After the trek we got straight on the night bus to Trujillo which is where I am now. We are on a pit stop to Macora which is the final destination in Peru.
Keep in touch,
Gibb
