Our last day on Koh Rong started as the others had with rain slamming onto our tin roof. The previous day we had just chilled out in bars and restaurants and had a swim in the rain but we didn't want to waste the small amount of time we had on this beautiful unexplored island just because of a bit of rain.
After two hours of feeling sorry for ourselves because we were slightly hungover we decided to man up and go on an adventure. The rain had almost stopped as we hired out a kayak for the afternoon. We managed to get into the kayak surprisingly gracefully and kept a good rhythm by singing Beyonce songs. After narrowly avoiding some rocks, a possible floating head (which turned out to be a coconut) we finally made it onto 4k beach. The untouched sand, clear sea and the fact there was not one other person there made it feel like we had just find a perfect secret deserted island.
The sea was so clear you could see all the life beneath the waves. We saw fish, white crabs, hermit crabs moving into shells and even shed snake skin! We also ventured into the jungle a bit which was amazing but as we were bare foot and advised not to enter it in the rain we only grazed the edges. After exploring this beautiful beach and jungle the rain started to get heavier so we thought we better make our way back before we got swept away in a monsoon. Fortunately this did not happen. Although half way back we realised we were the only geeks on a kayak wearing life jackets. Despite my love of photographic evidence I didn't risk taking my phone on a kayak in the rain but we risked the disposable camera which will be funny to see when we finally get them developed.
The weather obviously became clear and sunny as soon as we got back but we made the most of the afternoon. Some guys from Brighton we met were up for a game of volleyball and after recruiting a stoner American with one to many stories, a cute French couple and a guy from the night bus we had two teams. This was fun and slightly painful
yet after an hour or so we had to have a swim in the sea as it was so hot! This was also when we saw a real life star fish which was pretty cool!
The last night me and Frankie embraced the island life a bit too much and embarrassingly had to make a speech to the people we had met to explain that we were not in a state to socialise and had to go to bed. At quarter past eleven. Not something were proud of! But to make things worse I woke up to a rat running across our bed at 2am eating the packet of Oreos we left between our pillows. Honestly I cannot explain how terrifying and upsetting this whole situation was. Not to mention there is no electricity so we couldn't turn any lights on or anything to drown out the noise of it running around the floor! After shouting over the wall to some boys in the room next door who came and confirmed it was a rat but were also too scared to get rid of it, we had to face the fact we had to sleep under a mosquito net with a rat loose in the room.
Well it's safe to say we didn't sleep much, genuinely felt like we were in a bush tucker trial! It was real fun having to pack our backpacks at 8am and check out. Luckily we found two hammocks on the beach and had a beautiful rat free nap there before we had to get the ferry back to Sihoukville.
It was sad leaving the island, although the rat incident made it slightly easier! I can honestly say it's my favourite place in Asia so far and I would love to go back whilst it's still a special secluded island. One hundred percent reccomend Koh Rong.
