Today we got up at five am to make our way to the ancient temples just out side of Seim Reap. A tuktuk picked us up and took us on a ride in the pitch black up to Angkor village. I rarely get up at this time in the morning but it truly was worth it. The view of the lake was beautiful enough until we turned behind to see the sky an amazing multi tone of purple and pink. We were dropped off at the main temple which is 900 years old as this has the best view. We sat on the edge of the temple stairs refusing to join the hundreds of Chinese tourists at the lake and sat in awe watching the sky turn from black to purple to pink to blue daylight all with the back drop of the ancient temple. It was unreal and the peaceful lake and meditating monks set the scene perfectly.
Once the sun had rose we left the Angkor temple and hired a tuktuk guy for the day to take us round the others as they were far apart. We visited giant buddha statues, ancient royal palaces and the temple where Tomb Raider and Indiana Johns were filmed. As it was still early a lot of the sites we had to ourselves and I would advise this as when we left hundreds of tourists were pouring in!
The best part was being able to climb up the 50 metre high temple to a great viewing point accompanied by the cutest Thai tour guide who is currently leaning English.
We have just chilled out for the rest of the day on beanbags and hammocks around the pool and it was a beautiful sunny day.
