Getting lost while exploring
Cooked eggs on toast on our portable gas stove top.....loving it. Showered and left the campsite at 11am. Drove to the Key West harbour and watched the huge cruise ships. Enjoyed the best ice cream and waffle cone I've had in a long time from Polar Bears ice creamery. Sam had cookie dough and I had honeycomb swirl in thick handmade waffle cones.
As it's so close to Cuba, there is a lot of Cuban stores especially Cuban cigar stores. There are also a lot of stores selling key lime pie and flavoured products as key lime pie originated here. The town is packed with tourists and Americans on vacation.
There are lots of cafés & bars to visit, we had a beer at a bar called The Bull on the balcony terrace where we could people watch. A few youngins had started arriving for Spring Break, which made us feel very old.
Explored the town till 3.30pm and would highly recommend it for a visit. It's quite a drive and if we could do it again we would've stayed longer and taken advantage of the tours they offer such as night party cruises, snorkelling, jet ski hire, fishing etc.
Then we headed towards Miami and started ringing campgrounds. Was a fail as most of them closed at 5pm and we were at least a few hours away. Then looked into hostels or motels, I picked the International Inn Motel out of one of the accommodation booklets we had picked up. It had a vacancy, parking, was cheap & had a roof top pool.....winning.
Arrived at the dodgy looking joint and booked a room for one night. The lady at reception talked to us through a bullet proof glass panel & passed everything through a safety slot. Walked through the car park to our room past some questionable characters that dropped the "N" word every few words. Sam asks me "Shall we go somewhere else?". I laugh & say we've already paid it will be sweet.
The room smells disgusting but we soon fix that when we cook up fried eggs to go with our salad. Sam burns the eggs and sets off the smoke alarm. The room is hazy for the rest of the night like Cheech & Chong have stopped by to box the place out. It's an improvement.
We lock all three door locks and get ready for bed. Sam doesn't want to sleep in the bed closest to the door and I end up sleeping on the side closest to the door so I can protect him from intruders. Sounds like we are about to be involved in a crime scene outside our room most of the night. I slept like a baby, Sam not so much. I'm officially banned from choosing our accommodation.
