Yesterday was spent driving to Florence from rome. While we got to Florence around lunch the day was very long as we did the sightseeing and dinner before getting to hotel.
Florence is lovely it is much more what expected and Italian city to look like. Very old cobbled narrow streets, central squares very few cars, plus markets and exclusive leather and gold shops.
The cathedral was built 12 th century and is magnificent, there is a bapistry across from the cathedral which is from roman times
There is a dome on top of the bell tower which took centuries before someone was able to work out the mathematics and method and even today specialists are unable to work out how the craftsman did it , he apparently burned his plans and calculations so as to keep his methods secret.
We also visited academia museum where the sculpture David is, wow that is amazing he is huge and perfectly detailed you can see clear muscle definition and the veins on his hand, arms and neck. It is 6 meters high. Michelangelo did not use a plan or plaster template ot defined points like other artists, he said he didn't need to as he said the finished product was already in the marble waiting for him to start sculpturing! I think he was a freak of nature even his age of death was double the length of life that was average at the time, he lived to 89 and average length was about 45 y o . Then we also went to sacre cocce which is the church where leonado da Vinci tomb is, also that of Galileo, Rossini, Marconi and Michelangelo .
Altogether a bit surreal really I need time to absorb what I have seen .
On the way to Switzerland now apparently there by afternoon.
