Last two days in Rome. How do I describe Rome ? The ancient city magical the new city pretty dreadful!
We stayed in a converted convent which was quite stately all high ceilings, ornate windows and marble staircases. The room was quite small and Italians don't quite keep the same housekeeping standards as the german's .
Seeing the colosseum up close was one of those moments like I experienced on the barrier reef and sailing into Milford sound .
Seeing St peters and the Sistine also unbelievable. That michealangelo certainly could draw a picture!!
All in all yesterday awe inspiring and I am so glad to have seen them . It was truly a lifetime experience.
Definitely found Rome a contradiction in history beauty and amazing examples of ancient engineering art and intelligence alongside modern living. The city has a huge population most live in ugly apartments, the roads are chaotic, there are no lanes, lots of scooters, they basically drive and park however they like! There is graffiti on every available wall and rubbish strewn on the streets . How could they treat their areas surrounding such master prices with such little respect!
Basically many things in very poor condition and poorly maintained . Most toilets either flush continually or not at all. The post office experience was memorable had to take a ticket and wait for our number approximate 30 minutes, clearly Italians do more than post letters in post offices! When we got to counter we explained that we wants stamps for postcards. Got a bit suspicious when he had to calculate something on a calculator, then he proceeded to coit out about 15 huge stamps fir our 5 postcards. I tried to explain they clearly were too big for our needs and maybe he had one small international version but alas no! Still got the postcards in my bag!
Maybe Switzerland more user friendly in this department .
Today off to Florence , Firenze .
