Today saw us getting up early to visit the local farmers market, a tradition that has been carried on for over 400 years here in Otavalo. I must admit, when I found out we were going to a farmers market I wasn't that interested. But holy hell when I got there it was nothing like I imagined, nothing can prepare you for it. There were animals for sale everywhere, llamas, pigs, ducklings, chickens, cows, horses, cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits...every domesticated animal you could think of. Most were for eating, some as pets. I don't think I'll ever forget the smell, the hustle and bustle of these people negotiating prices and mostly, the horrific squealing of pigs being roughly dragged and kicked into the back of utes to meet their fate. To be honest I was glad to get out of there, but it's an experience that I won't be forgetting I'm a hurry.
The rest of the morning was spent in the markets looking at the handicrafts of the locals and bartering with my American compadre Shirley, who was well versed in negotiations. This afternoon we get back on the bus for another night in Quito. As it is Saturday I plan to have a few 80c beers and party Ecuadorian style! Ole ole ole!
