Today saw the start of Songkran, the Thai new year, and to celebrate there was a country wide water fight. I'm still on Koh Tao and here there was absolute anarchy! Hoards of locals drive about in the backs of pickup trucks, armed with water pistols and buckets of water which they drench any and all passers by with, regardless of attire or electronic equipment! There are children on the roadsides doing the same and we tourists also joined in the euphoria. It was a truly amazing atmosphere.
I purchased a water pistol for the extortionate price of 550 baht (£11) but was very glad I did as without one, you are something of a sitting duck. Whilst the streets were pretty wild, the real party was at the pool of my dive school. Literally hundreds of people were in and around the water and almost everyone had water pistols. As a lifeguard I had to go against pretty much everything I know and if I had been on duty I think I would have just broken down in tears!
I stayed at the water fight for about four hours and whilst it was like being twelve again, by the end I looked like an octogenarian due to all the water induced wrinkles. It was more fun than I've had in a long time, If only we had the weather to do it in the UK!

Ian Bridge Good thing your sisters weren't there with you tooled up or they'd have coped it big time! Sounds terrific fun.
