George's World Travels
So, Cape Trib....
We came up here with a tour and had a few interesting stops on the way, to see the area.
The most successful of these was by far this nature reserve in Port Douglas. M was so happy! There were 2 Cassowarys roaming around being very sweet. Got some great pics and a mini film of it. I even saw how they hum and vibratem like what M saw them doing in Carins. Was pretty scary! We have yet to discover why or how the birds do it. The sound is like someone playing on a didge and they seriosuly vibrate!!
On top of that we found a Cassowary poster! (which M immediately bought! and will soon have pride of place in his uni room at York) and a story book about them. Maybe that got a little silly, we really are buying all merchandise that has the remotest connection with Cassowarys!
We also stopped by Mossam Gorge, which was quite pretty, but after the beauty of Darwin we werent bowled over like some.
Then onto a river cruise of the Daintree. Pretty cool. Saw more salt water crocs (theyre the ones you dont want to come across when swimming!-very big, very aggressive) and the area was very pretty. My highlight though was seeing up close the famous green frog (dont know actual name! ill put up a pic of it when I can) thats on so many postcards for Queensland. Very cute. Oh yeh, and we saw a python in a tree. That was fun.
Cape Trib is a little like a bigger version of the part of Mission Beach that we stayed in. Rainforest everywhere. Roaming Cassowarys. A little out in the sticks. Our accommodation is ok, but after our luxourious room(s) in Cairns (see Carins postcard from M) it was an inevitable step down. Also we have the company of ants again. You can imagine Ms reaction! The good thing is that we're really close to the beach which is beautiful.
Yesterday we went out on the Great Barrier Reef for some snorkelling, hense the picture. Was really cool. ITs the only place in the world where two natural wonders meet each other- the rainforest goes right up onto the reef.
We were really lucky with the weather, apparently its been raining for weeks, but yesterday was gorgeous sun. We saw some amazing fish. Some were illuminescent colour, like you get on highlighter pens. Saw a few scary ones too (we were stricly told not to touch anything and wed be ok!) The coral was beautiful, especially with the sun light dancing on it through the water. Both of us saw a huge sting ray, half hidden under a rock and M even saw a shark! (the ones in that area werent dangerous as they were pretty small) I got a water camera and used up a film in no time. Hopefully some of the pics will come out.
Am so glad we did that on one of our last days here, a really special day. And I wasnt at all sea sick was a great bonus after the hell of the Whitsundays trip!
We're heading back to Cairns today, after we go jungle swinging up in the canopy of the rainforest. Should be really fun.
We're leaving Oz on Monday, which has come around pretty quick. Im really looking forward to the long flight as Ive saved the new Harry Potter book for it!!! Very disciplined I know.
Hope everyones having a good summer. I heard you guys have had ANOTHER heat wave!! Hope it lasts for when we get home,
G xxxx
