Friends and Family
After a bit of a disappointing morning at the Pinnacles, we headed straight for Perth. Now, as many of you know already, about 8 years ago we drove to Perth in a small rented motorhome with the kids, and covered Perth and the south coast. So this time we were not really keen to see the sights, rather just catch up with friends and family who have moved there.
First, our general impressions of Perth, the city. Last time we stopped at Scarborough, a very nice beach, and checked out the coast, the city, Freo, and Rottnest Island. But we really did not spend much time in the greater city of Perth - the suburbs. This time we did, and the major impression is water, water, water. The Swan River (really more of an estuary) meanders its way right through the city, sometimes a wide expanse, sometimes narrowing to a tiny bottleneck. Almost everywhere is on the water, or not far from it. This is apart from the actual coast and those areas opening onto the sea. It is a really beautiful town.
The other major impression was - expensive. Everything here is expensive, from the real estate to the coffee. I guess that is the legacy of a booming economy, but can be a bit of a drag if you are not working in mining.
Now to mention the family and friends, as I know some of you following the blog are family, and some are mutual friends. If you are neither, feel free to just jump this paragraph altogether.
The family we have here is Nagwa, George's second cousin, and her husband Wahid, and their two sons. I think she is well known to George's mother's family, mostly in Sydney, and we filled her in on all their news, including Tou Tou's baby (see early entries in Canberra.)
The friends we caught up with were the Duffs, who have been in Perth about two years now. The boys have grown up so much. Will (not Willo anymore) is now eleven and starting high school soon. Angus is a strapping young man, getting quite tall. And Hugh has grown into the cutest three year old with a cheeky smile and a very outgoing nature. James and Jane are doing really well and seem very happy, but are missing all the Melbourne crowd. It was wonderful catching up.
GeorgY's bit
Yes, Perth is much bigger than I remember, mostly under water or overlooking it. A lot of dodgy yet costly coffee, so our pod machine did what came natural to it.
Had a lovely time with friends and family and hope to catch up with them later in Melbourne. So, quoting Jake Blues from the Blues Brothers movie, " The Lord works in mysterious ways".
