Having arrived in Hamburg in the evening we checked into our hostel, got some food from the local supermarket then went to bed.
After a nice bowl of Crunchy Nut (luxury!) we set off to the harbour area, Landungsbrucken. I think at first we were both a bit disappointed with what we arrived to, not the most attractive harbour but I suppose we're more used to the ones from home! It's quite an industrial city so not the most picturesque, although there was a nice tall ship there.
We then headed towards the student area, Sternschanze, which our hostel owner had told us about and was much more interesting to walk around. After lunch we explored this part of town as there were some cool clothes shops and cafes. Next we jumped on the train to the main city centre called Jungfernstieg which seemed more upmarket with more expensive shops and a huge shopping centre. This area of Hamburg also had a few more old buildings including the town hall which were much more attractive. .
For dinner we headed back to the harbour area, which actually looked much nicer as the sun was setting. We decided to go to a tapas restaurant which was really tasty and busy too so there was a great atmosphere.
Although Hamburg is known for the Reeperbahn, the party/seedy/more touristy area, we decided not to go there and take in some of the nicer districts. Hamburg was quite a change from the other places we'd visited because of the harbour area so that made it a good one day trip.
Next stop, Eindhoven - our first early morning train, well 8.45am!
