On Inhabiting India
brief update:
yesterday, i met with my mentor and apparently she is deeply interested in western music. she really wants me to teach her piano, which i will do happily. she is also helping me find both a sitar and a sitar teacher. the cell phone of the sitar player she called was disconnected so she told me she would go to his house and talk to him about lessons. now that's dedication!
last night, i went to this amazing indian concert. the female vocalist was both talented and stunningly beautiful. it made me wish i had time to do everything i have some fascination with and, believe me, my humongous list is still growing. after the singing, there was goosebump-causing kathak dancing. yet another interest.
today, as most of you know, was my birthday and the staff did this ritual that involved incense, red powder and rice on my forehead and facing east (sound familiar?). the cake was delicious.
after eating cake, they posted the housing arrangements for the rest of our stay (we'll move in a week from now). my family, the shah's, are an older couple with a beautiful house just outside of pune. the wife is an excellent cook, i hear, and is looking forward to teaching me. their four daughters are all artists of some kind and i guess their house is covered in their artwork. yes. so i'm very excited to eat lunch with them on sunday.
that's all for now. time for dinner.
