"Honestly, sir, I was just checking to make sure my phone was turned off. I wasn't taking a picture of the statue of David when it is clearly marked that you're not allowed to. Who would do such a thing?"
And that was how Graham got a quick picture of the front of the statue of David. It was much easier to get a picture from behind, but Jill didn't think David's bum was a good blog picture.
We've departed Florence and are now on our way to Cinque Terre via Pisa. The Pisa post will follow as soon as Jill musters the strength to put it together.
We leave Florence with mixed feelings. We have seen some of the greatest works of art and some of the most groundbreaking architecture that was ever conceived of in Italy, and possibly the world. It was a very unique and inspiring experience.
Our accommodations, if you can call them that, were sorely lacking for a variety of reasons. We realized quickly how fortunate we had been thus far on our journey to have quality hostels and hotels. We won't go into too much detail as to what was wrong with this particular place, but suffice to say that Graham only got an hour sleep the first night there, and had to use his angry voice.
The city itself though was very unique. Different from anything we had seen thus far. Backwards, almost. That is, the outside of the buildings and churches here seem more colourful and extravagant than the insides of the buildings. We both noticed that the trend had been to have dark gothic stone on the outside, and then bright colourful interior decor. Florence seems to be the other way around.
We enjoyed our tour of the city, bit are honestly looking forward to the "off the beaten path" aspect of our next destination - Cinque Terre. Although there maybe some hiking involved, we hope that the overall atmosphere will be less loud, less busy and more relaxing.
Graham has also fallen in love with gelato, so all that walking may soon go to waste. Or all the gelato may soon go to his waist. Either way, the stuff's delicious.
Looking forward to the Pisa post Jill!
