Remember how I guessed that the party would be a gong show? Well, we'll need a bigger type of cymbal to describe the Queen's day festivities in Amsterdam.
Every block, every Square and every alley was absolutely rammed with people wearing their orange colours proudly. Music rang out from speakers on boats, as well as large stages that were set up over night throughout the city - and I do mean throughout. This party shut the entire city down. Which meant more walking from place to place, but it was worth it just to take it all in.
The canals were a traffic jam of large party boats and smaller craft with just a few people boating around and sipping wine to take it all in. Your two favourite travelers were never without a cold Heineken in their hands, as they were sold everywhere from bars to the city's major park, where people had set up a make shift market to sell whatever they could throw together.
And... Jill even sampled the local baked goods with me. The overall effects were mild, but hey... When in Rome... Or Amsterdam in this case...
All in all, it was a great way to revel in the full spirit of the people of the Netherlands. Next time, I bring my orange jumpsuit.
As I write this on my iPhone (think Apple would sponsor our next trip?), we're on the train to Berlin, enjoying the sights of the German countryside, and occasionally the backs of our eyelids.
We just passed a huge VW factory I believe just passing through Hanover. Golf's and Jetta's line every parking lot we pass in each station. Leads me to wonder if Duench family reunions in Germany would still be dominated by Chevy's or if we would have made the switch to the local brand.
I'll keep an eye out for any Dennich's.
For now, it's back to the countryside view and the dulcet tones of Phil Collins (just happened to be what the shuffle was currently playing - kinda sad he retired, but I digress...)
Until the next update from Berlin,

Sean Depends on what type of gong you were referring to :-) There are some pretty large wind gongs out there! Oh, and don't forget about Tam Tams.....
MOM Countryside is like Ontario? Sure sounds like it. Are you ready for a new taste in beer? It is cold and yummy!!! Sure love getting these updates..... Love you, Mom
Naomi If you passed the big VM factory... you were in Wolfsburg. Sam and I toured the factory, museum and test drove our new SUV there before it was released in Canada.
