Gary's World Tour!!
We have escaped the hustle of the big city in bangkok and we are now in the somewhat smaller town of Kanchangaburi which is to the west of the capital. We had our last nite in Bangkok on thursday, we went to a restaurant called "cabbages and condoms" - which is a restaurant run to raise money and promote awareness of sexually transmitted diseases in Thailand. The restaurant was a sea of fairy lights in tall trees, with odd sculptures made out of a variety of condoms! It was also a proper thai meal for us all, and went down very well! After various issues with taxi's, tourist offices and a hike accross the city with our full packs on, we left bangkok on a short 2 hour bus trip to head this way - a bus trip which became the local school run and took 4 hours instead...! Once we arrived we got on a Som Lar - a peddle tuk tuk - and we were driven to our new accomodation which is the Jolly Frog guest house! (This after my driver collided with a large foodstand/blue umbrella combination) The accomodation is very basic - a manual toilet flush is quite a new experience, plus no hot water or air con makes for a sticky night! However, i cant complain - my 2 nights here will cost me 2 quid! The beer is also similarly cheep - as Keith discovered last nite to his cost - he claims the first person to be sick on tour title! This was after a crazy nite time adventure for all 3 of us - the room key was lost - not by me either i might add - after we had been out for the evening! Keith and Jammo both went and slept whilst i took it upon myself to scour the local area for the key for 2 hours in the rain! This also involved me dodging the many stray dogs and learning thai outside one of the bars we had been 2 earlier in the evening from the landlady and her friend! I have since forgotten it all. When i returned to the room - still without the key i went to bed - forgetting that no key, means no power, which means no fan - so we were very hot in the morning! Keith wakes up - and has no idea where he is, or how he got there, or why the fan isnt on!! "because you lost they key last nite keith!" comes the reply - at which point he reaches down and pulls it from his pocket!! GRRR!! Tommorow we are back on the sight seeing trail, going up to the bridge over the river Kwai and riding the infamous death railway - i am also hoping to pet a tiger! We plan to return to Bangkok on tuesday, something i dont relish - before heading out towards Chaing Mai for a week or so! I shall update again then! Gaz
