So today is our last day in Porto Seguro and after 4 days I finally get some time to write the blog!
Porto Seguro is a famous seaside town halfway up the Bahia coast line and a favourite beachside resort for Brazilians especially from Minas Girais.
We arrived on our first day about midday and after 45 mins of trying to find the hotel we gave up and went tot he beach instead. The Beaches here are unlike anything I had seen before. It is pretty much a party atmosphere which tables and chairs set up everywhere, music blaring. Part Market (with touters selling pretty much anything you could want) part relaxing resort! The sea (a wonderful azul green) was perfect temperature and everyone was out enjoying themselves.
Bruno (one of the friends we are travelling with) decided to show me the famoue 'Axe Moi' a bar with a stage opening out to the beach. Lots of music - everyone having a good time. I didnt expect when I got closer to the stage to see that the theme of this place is transexual dancers and singing. Still Lady Butterfly was very entertaining!
When we got back to our table we ordered some Agua coco. Fresh coconuts chilled with the top cut off and a straw in to drink the water and a bit to eat! The good news was we got new directions to the hotel and so went to check it out. Despite being poorly organised (our booking was made for 1 room not 2 and took 1hour to resolve) the place we were staying was incredible. The best swimming pool ever! Once we checked in I just ran and jumped right in.
That night we drove out and visited Arraial D'ajuda but ferry! The place was incredible. small cobbled streets with night market stals, restaurants and pizzerias everywhere with hordes of Brazilian tourists and locals alike enjoying the balmy evening.
The next day we drove up to a more secluded beach. I prefered this beach as it was more relaxed and tryed some of the beach food being sold - Pastels, Pies, Charcoal grilled mozzerella covered in oragano, ice cream, cashew nuts. We also bought some bits and pieces. On the beaches here you can buy some really random things: table cloths, hammocks, shelves, woodwork! We didnt stay too long here though as my Brazilian travel mates wanted to see another beach - even more remote. This one meant you had to drive a sandy dirt track off rad for 45 mins. But it was worth it. We arrived at a very pictoresque beach with palm and coconut tress lining the perfect white sand. On the way back we drove through an Indios village (I was asleep in the back (something that has become a tradition of mine) and was awoken by excited voices telling me to grab my camera. Jumping out I saw why as a smal Indios kid ran up to me and almost through what at first glance appeared to be a dusty rug - but on closer inspection turned out to be a 3 toed sloth. Taking it from him it just wrapped its long arms around me - gave me a hug and then proceeded to fall asleep! These creatures are fascinating. Completely unique in the evolution tree (with just 6 subspecies of its class) It was the first of what i hope are many animal encounters here in Brazil - which is famed for its truely unique mammals. None more unique than the sloth! The slowest mammal on the planet!
When we got back to Porto we went for a Churasco (Brazilian BBQ) and I ate way too much again - including Chicken Heart and Buffalo hump!!
The last 2 days were spent relaxing by the beach and pool and visiting Arraial again.
Tonight we catch an overnight bus to Valencia and then the Ferry over to the island of Boipeba - where if we are really lucky we may bump into my brother and sister in law!
More soon
