Gary's World Adventure
Well after a 6hr bus journey and into some kind of organised chaos unlike Siem Reap which was well just chaos we arrived!
Along the way we passed though a place called Kompong Thom and the history here is this place during the Khmer Rouge (your probably wondering what that is It'll unfold in a minute) the locals ate Tarantula's to keep alive and now these days they breed them underground and still eat but now as a delicacy! I saw a lady with a plate of about 200 on her head...you guessed it I never did try them but an australian guy I met did and said they tasted like chicken!
Okay first night in Phomn Penh Lewis and I watched the film "killing Fields" which is about the war with france and america whereby the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia...this was followed by a strict regime whereby lots of people got tortured/killed...Im suprised the people of cambodia are happy people after seeing the film and then next we visited the S21-Tueol Slong musuem where the Khmer Rouge tortured their victime...this was a eiry place. But also showed the history behind the people of Cambodia.
Our second day we started our volunteer work which was quite sad to see/know how many disabled children their are behind closed doors on cambodia. Their is no systems in place like the western world or promotion of independance, the children are not actually being taught anything just living with their condition that was the sad side of it...though when I had several children with hiv/aids/autisum/cerepal plasy and other disabilities all clinging to me and wanting my attention it was worth it! And when a little girl fell asleep in my arms when we were on a swing it was then I realised it was worthwhile!
By the 4th day in phomn penh Lewis and I had decided we would not be travelling together for the 2mths as arranged...we were 2 totally different people and I wanted the freedom of being back on my own again so it was decided upon leaving cambodia I would be going solo again!
It was good to catch up with Nicola (from elephant trek 2mths ago) and meet Gordon/Dana and I think they rescued the end of my time in cambodia fot that Im thankful.
Something Ive learnt is a place is not just memorable for the attractions it holds but also for the company your in also!
Its onwards for now to Vietnam and see what that holds for me...goodbye Cambodia!
