Took a trip from Arequipa to the Colco Canyon. At one point in our journey we reached 4800 meters. I haven't been that high since my visit to Jamaica in 2007. Sticking to that theme I was encouraged to chew coco leaves to help me "adjust to the altitude". This with the 2 paracetamol and 1 ibuprofen I took seemed to do the trick and also left me with a strangely numb tongue. While chewing on my leaves I was afforded spectacular views of the snow topped volcanoes dominating the skyline.
We continued on our way meandering down the long dirt track to Chivay. The colloquial English word "lush" comes to mind when you see the canyon for the first time. Green farmland on the verge of harvesting. These people know how to farm, using a rather ingenious terrace system along the canyon sides to plant their crops. Here we ended our day soaking in the open air hot springs which were a balmy 38 degrees. (Although rather oddly they advised us to "Rub ourselves in the shower before entering the pool") We stayed that night in Coperaque a few miles from Chivay.
