Flying over New Zealand, I caught my first glimpses of the snow-capped mountain ranges far beneath us, was an amazing sight! Even before I had landed I could see hundreds of sheep scattered across the hillside, the stereotypical image you could imagine. The air was a lot cooler and fresher stepping off the plane and I didn't really know what to expect from this far away country. Having heard that the Kiwi's were a friendly nation, I was disheartened when the first Kiwi I met, the bus driver into town, had a go at me for asking where the bus was going to. She told me to get off and have a look at the front of the bus! After following her orders I decided to give her a $20 note for a $3 ride, she wasn't best pleased! The staff at my chosen hostel were a lot nicer luckily and I spent the rest of the afternoon wandering a bit of the town before collapsing at the hostel, eating some dinner, watching some TV and falling asleep.
I only had one day to see the town as I was due to be heading over to the west coast very soon. After a nice lie in which I haven't had in a while, I headed into the town with not much of a plan. I ended up wandering the museum and learnt a bit about Maori life and culture which was cool. They also had an exhibit on Antartica as we're not too far away from here! The coldness is definitely an indicator of how close we are! There's not a lot of activities to do in Christchurch so i ended up walking around the centre of town which wasn't very big. It was nice though with a big Cathedral, gardens and even a river with punting. The town felt very English so I felt quite at home there! My evening was spent chilling at the hostel again and catching up a bit on the Olympic action, the Kiwi's seem desperate to win some medals, I guess it's just because they're such a small population!
Has felt quite strange being in a new country and a new environment that I have to get used to. Also felt quite strange to be travelling solo again as practically all my time in Australia was spent with others and it was quite nice to be able to have some time to myself and be able to do what I wanted without anyone interfering! Can't wait to get going though and see some of the amazing stuff that New Zealand has to offer!
