Hey evreyone
We've had a busy day again today we visited the hands on care clinic in brikama and were given a guided tour of the whole clinic. The clinic primarily deals with hiv and sexual transmitted diseases while the health clinic situated next door deals with other illnesses. We were shown evreything from the consultation rooms to the blood bank. We learnt many things about the sevice the clinic provides such as how volunteers care in the community similar to our home care workers in the uk only have one or two patients per volunteer so that they can build better and closer working relationships with their patients which is different from our home care system where the same care workers may not see the same patient often.
Mam our contact in the centre who is a volunteer in the community also took us to visit one of her patients who has HIV and other medical conditions. This was very inlightening to see her working with this man who as a result of a stroke cannot speak and communicates through a series of sounds and sign langauge.
Mam also took us to visit a HIV support group which supports people diagnosed with HIV and their families. The memebers of this group were very open about their infection and emphasised the need for others to be open so that infection of others can be stopped. It was also enlightening to talk to people inected with HIV and their perception of the disease and the stigma attatched to it and we learnt a lot.
Overall it has been a very busy day and it has been one of the hottest we've expirienced since being here which makes it even more exhausting but extremly inspiring.
We'll try and keep you as updated as possible and let you know how we are doing in general.
love
Chantelle, Kellie and Laura xx
