White water rafting was epic today - near death experience included, of course!
We took a bus over to Tully, which is a bit of a s***-hole town in the middle of nowhere. Its the place in Australia that gets the most rain, and its surrounded by rainforest and misty moutains (ingeniously named The Misty Mountains. Go figure.) We ended up rafting down Tully river, which was absolutely amazing. The scenery was incredible, just mountains of volcanic rock, waterfalls, and thick rainforest that is millions of years old (one of the oldest forests in the world apparently). And the river was very much alive - rocks and rapids all the way down. It was quite a bumpy ride! There were 6 of us in our raft - a couple from Hong Kong, us three, and our guide - a typical outdoorsy Aussie called Callum who seemed very keen on taking us to the most dangerous parts of the river. We ended up stuck between rocks a few times, covered by water (Emma and I were in the front), etc, etc. A few other groups ended up upside down and we did have a near fall moment where the raft tipped to vertical and our guide fell off but we all managed to stay on (very proud of that lol). Unfortunately, when we passed through the same spot after lunch it didnt go so well for me - another boat crashed into us and I ended up with the top half of my body out of the raft whilst my legs were still in it, and got dragged ON MY FACE on like massive rocks for a couple meters, before falling out completely and hanging on to some rocks for dear life before I managed to climb out of the river. It was not very pleasant, but quite fun in retrospect! My nose is quite inflammed and I've got scratches and bruises on my left arm but hey, its all in good fun!
Tonight we are out to dinner for Hannah's birthday before crashing quite early - the 6am start is starting to catch up on me!
