Our escape from SE Asia turned out a bit more eventful than we thought it would be - we arrived in Bangkok on the sleeper train without any problems on Saturday to find a relatively deserted Khao San Road. That evening, protests properly kicked off and some gun shots went off down our road (we heard the next day that 18 people died so probably some from that). We saw a group of people running towards us (some looking rather scared) when we wandered towards Khao San Road after dinner, so I'm assuming it was due to that. Pretty scary stuff! We left early the next morning to make sure we got to the airport - a wise choice as most of the route was full with army and police and street barricades. Fun times!
Sydney so far is pretty cool! We are staying at Wake Up (it was recommended by so many people that we just had to stay there), and its a really good place. Huge, very clean and organised, spatious dorms, its own cafe and bar, nice kitchen and tv area, etc. Basically the ideal hostel, really.
We found our way to the Opera House and Harbour bridge yesterday morning after our flight (in sleepy daze though as we only had about 30 mins sleep due to the fact that the most annoying child in the world was on our flight).
Today we signed up with MojoSurf company and went surfing! It was awesome, I couldn't get enough of it (although windsurfing is still the way to go). It reminded me of when I started to learn how to windsurf - even if you are crap, you are still so determined to go back and try again (even if you just end up getting destroyed by the waves...over and over again). Hit my head with the board, got dragged by the board several times, got thrown around by the waves ... it was awesome! By the end of the afternoon I was standing up (rather wobbly) for almost all of the waves I caught. Bloody exhausting though, my arms are dead at the moment.
Tonight we are meeting a friend from uni for drinks at the Opera House bar - apparently the view is epic. Then tomorrow we hit the road with Greyhound Australia for a 12 hour night bus (it will be heaven after the buses in Laos!) to Byron Bay. I am determined to keep up the surfing as we make our way up the coast just so I can be semi-decent at it by the time we leave Cairns!
