Derry, UK to Galway, Ireland.
Leaving the campsites behind us for the moment, the plan was to find somewhere to stay in town when we arrived. We parked the mini in a centrally located, over-crowded carpark, where we met a lovely lady quite randomly that gave us hints and tips on what to do while in town. She and her daughter showed us into town and to a tiny street market (where we were later to sample some of the finest crepes in town!!)
We found an internet cafe and managed to line up a great little B&B near the centre of town. The hostess was one of the nicest, most helpful people we had ever met - a trait that we were fast learning was the Irish standard.
We spent what was left of the afternoon wandering around town and checking out the sites. The hussle and bussle of Galway on a sunny Saturday afternoon was amazing. As the day drew to a close, we decided to prepare for the evening - it was beer o'clock.
The evening was fantastic. We popped in and out of pubs, listening to the music, sampling the local wares. We ended up in a tiny pub, chatting away to some of the locals and some others there on holidays. In such a relaxed atmoshpere, it's strange how someone always knows someone else who has been to your home town.
But the definate highlight of the evening came as things were winding up for us, when a young local lass took Liz aside and asked her 'are you Irish?' When Liz inquired as to why she thought this, her response was 'because you have been downing Guiness all night like a champ! I'm local, and I can't even drink like that!!' I think Liz still has a little bit of a big head about that one...
Our focus had begun to swing from camping and beautiul landscapes, and was quickly becoming fast city living, tiny Irish pubs, friendly people and loud Irish music. Heaven.
