Galway, Ireland to Dingle, Ireland.
After a reasonably slow day to the day, another great breakfast, and a last wander around town, we set off toward Dingle. We took the advise of our hostess and headed for a ferry that would cut around an hour out of our driving time, and bypass Limerick (a town that according to everyone we spoke to had no cultural value at all, and was well worth missing).
The drive landed us in Dingle late afternoon. A small coastal town, home to a resident dolphin named Fungie (who we did not get the chance to meet), and a great place to set up camp for exploring the Dingle Peninsula and the County Kerry coastline. We had arrived in Dingle again with no real idea of where to stay, so we tumbled out of the car and into an internet cafe, where we soon found a local hostel/camp ground half a mile out of town.
After setting up camp, we went back into town for a meal and a quick explore, mapping out what we wanted to do the next day, then back to camp for an early night.
The next day, we were up early and away for a tour around the coast. We stopped in at Dunbeg Fort, an Iron Age fortress perched on the clifftops for a look around - pretty amazing stuff. From here we continued around the coast to Slea Head, the most eastern point of the Irish mainland, with stunning views to Great Blasket Island. More stunning coastline and lumpy roads circled us back to Dingle in good time.
As it was a clear day, we decided to drive up to Connor Pass (the highest in Ireland at a whopping 456m) just north of Dingle. The views around the bay and the surrounding mountains were amazing. a nearby waterfall also felt the wrath of our camera, with some beautiful drops.
A busy morning of driving and sightseeing told me it was time to relax, so we headed back in to town to seek out a little place that we had heard of. This place, the perfect retreat for any man, was half traditional Irish pub, half hardware store. I kid you not. What a perfect combination! It would be the truth if you said you were 'just popping down to the hardware store' and came home several pints worse for wear!! This was the highlight of my day - thanks for the tip Dave! After a few pints soaking in the atmosphere, we headed back to camp for a relaxing evening of Uno.
