Good Morning FWA 8th graders and chaperones!!!
Rise and shine and Yippee Kay Yea for your last day in D.C.,
From the photos, I know you have already taken the Capital by storm as any good FWA Warrior would, but stay alert today as you are headed into MAJOR territory. Mount Vernon Major’s territory, that is.
Home to Mount Vernon High School Founded in 1939, the mission of Mount Vernon High School is to empower its culturally diverse student body through a dynamic partnership with parents, teachers, staff members and the community, and to inspire students to meet high academic standards, lead ethical lives, and demonstrate responsible citizenship. Sound familiar?
The school motto is "Esse Non Videri." This phrase is Latin for "To be, not to seem to be."
The school takes its name from George Washington's estate, Mount Vernon, and is located a mile and a half from the historic site.
The Mount Vernon High School nickname is the "Majors". This is a reference to George Washington and his "beloved" half-brother, Lawrence Washington, who both served as Adjunct of Virginia Colony. This position came with the rank of "Major" and included a distinctive red uniform. The school colors are maroon and gray. Please don’t ask to see my cheerleading uniform as it is so old the moths have already devoured it.
But here is some trivia to stump your teachers with as well as your tour guides, and although a true fact, they may be a bit uncomfortable with it:
One of his most successful ventures was the establishment of a distillery in 1797; he (Washington) briefly became one of the new nation's largest distillers of whiskey.
Your job is to phrase it into a trivia question, Good luck and Enjoy the beauty that is Mount Vernon.
Not sure if you will get to see the old Grist Mill on Dogue Creek, but take note of the Washington’s back yard. They have the whole of the Potomac River as their back yard. Kind of like living on the Trinity.
Miss you al and can’t wait to see you tonight. Have a safe flight.

Enjoy your day! You are so very lucky to have such beautiful weather! The chaperones report everything has been great and that is because all of you have been on your best behavior... THANKS!!!! It makes the trip so much more enjoyable for all! We continue to miss you. I showed your photos to the 6th graders yesterday, so they could see what awaits them!
Fondly,
Mrs. Rice
PS: Parents: please show up on time tonight! These wonderful chaperones need to get home to their families. Also, remember you MUST sign out your student at DFW, so we know you have them.
