Well our time with Adam is coming to an end. Off to Florida tomorrow morning. Yesterday, we headed to Newseum, a museum devoted to news. It is one of the few museums you actually pay for in Washington (most are run by the Smithsonian Institute and free) but luckily, Adam has a friend that could get us in for free as he works for CNN. He met us and sorted the tickets for us which was really good of him (Adults are $25). The tickets actually allows you entry for 2 days and it easy to see why. It was another museum when we entered at 10am and came out at 5pm. 6 levels covering all different topics, including news through the years, the timeline of radio / television / internet, a memorial to those journalist who have died in pursuit of the news, FBI and my favourite, the Pultizer Prize Photograph Gallery. Some very powerful images in there and you could learn the stories behind the photos to. They also had a copy of the front page of a newspaper from each state in America plus a selection from overseas. The one they had for Australia was from QLD and it was actually a front page that had a big ad on it (obviously if you had the chance to open to the next page you would see the real front page but you don't get that chance so it made a bit of a joke of our news. Anyway, a museum worth going to if in DC, even though it does cost.
Adam came and picked us up and took us out to dinner, a Brazilan Chuscaria which was nice. So full afterwards. Mum wanted to see Costco as she has never been so we went and did some shopping, very similar to the Australian one, selling everything and anything. A couple of more stops before heading home and to bed.
This morning, Adam tried to get tickets for the African American Museum, the newest museum opened by the Smithsonian Institute. Unlike their other museums, you have to get a timed ticket to enter and they become available from 6.30am online. Adam said he tried at 6.30am but no luck, they were gone by 6.31am which seems unbelievable. Sounds like robots at work. They do issue some in advance, eg in September, the tickets for December will become available and there are some available from 1pm at the ticket gate but you aren't guaranteed them. Oh well, just have to visit next time we are in town.
Decided to do stuff with Adam instead. Helped him put a dining table and chairs together before we took Belle (Adam's dog) to Great Falls, a local national park. The Potomac River flows through here and there is a beautiful waterfall here in the park, along with lots of trails. We checked out the falls before Adam and I took Belle for a bit of a walk down one of the trails while mum took a seat and watched the birds and local wildlife. Beautiful day today, as yesterday it rained for most of it.
Back to the apartment for a bit and Adam cooked us some dinner. This evening Adam and I took Belle for a walk around the monuments so I could get some photos. Headed out about 6.15pm and got back just after 9.30pm. Started out when it was beautiful and sunny and then a lovely sunset made for some great photos over the Reflection Pool. So many people out enjoying the monuments and the great weather. Whoever decided on the layout all those years ago for Washington DC did do a great job. It doesn't matter how many times I see these different monuments to Presidents and wars and I never get sick of them. I do think they should bring President Trump and his advisors down to these war memorials and remind them of the cost of the war, before one of his tweets starts something we can't stop.
After getting home, mum wanted Adam to take her to Target for some shopping so they are still out while I finish my packing and this blog. Mum still hasn't packed her bag so it is going to be a late one for her as it is now 11.15pm!!
