Day 11

I am a proper teacher now. I must be because everyday I stand in front of a class & they shout " GOOD MORNING TEACHER, HOW ARE YOU TODAY?". It would warm the iciest of hearts I tell you. I do feel bad that I'm responsible for their learning yet I have no idea what I'm talking about. Still, I can speak English so that's a start. It doesn't help matters that their English text books are so badly printed. They are all over the place, particularly the pictures of people. So " This is my mother , she is very pretty" must be quite confusing when Mum has actually got a thick burgundy moustache.

My first Khymer meal was bittersweet. Feeling quite pleased with myself for timing the sleeping pills so perfectly that I had zero jet lag, I headed into town, found a nice spot, ordered the local speciality & sat back smugly. Moments later, someone started hacking up a gob behind me so loud & for so long that I can only imagine he needed a spitoon the size of Australia when it finally surfaced. When it did, he left the loo, went into the kitchen and came back with my curry.

On the way home I saw a hen with 4 lovely fluffy chicks. Have given up chicken.

The third night I got inducted into the gang. There were no scary initiation ceremonies or tests, just dollar cocktails at the local 5 star hotel.

They are all very nice once you get to know them. Which I did, and then they left.

Except for the woman who has left a job as a crime scene investigator to stay out here full time - she has the best stories, my Mother would be beside herself.

So am getting to know a new batch. We all go out to eat together every night, despite having nothing in common except volunteering. It's well weird.

I live in hope that the next new recruit to arrive will be a well dressed gay man who watches Project Runway & Strictly & thinks my gags are the funniest things like ever but I fear I may be waiting some time....
