Today was a day off as teams planned menus and gathered supplies for our trek up the coast. Apparently past Gisborne we will not be seeing any large towns for the next 4 days so we have to stock up on groceries now. It was a good day to explore the city on foot. I started out walking into town with Mary. We visited a local Cidery where they make all kinds of cider, mostly apple
Cider. We had some tastes and bought a bottle of their honey wine - very sweet , more like a mead. I'm sure it will go great on vanilla ice cream! We wandered over to the local bike shop and discovered some unusual handlebar tape ( flowers) so we had to buy that of course. Stopped at McDonalds for a 1.50 cheeseburger special and a free coffee (over 65). Can't eat much cheaper than that! And food is expensive in New Zealand.
We went our separate ways for the afternoon. I strolled down to the beach to take some photos. It was very windy and the water was rough so not too many people were around.
After enjoying that scene for a while a walked back towards town and decided to walk up to the Kaiti Hill Lookout. A steep climb but well worth the view. This is the spot where Captain James Cook was sighted by the Maori. Cook first landed in New Zealand in October 1769. The first 'hongi' between Maori and European took place on a rock in the river not far from where Cook's statue now stands.
All in all I did a lot of walking today and now it's time to make sure my bike is ready for the ride up to Tokomaru Bay. Apparently an easy 89 k. We shall see.
