This will be the last NZ entry as we fly out to Australia next week (to see Fran's cousin, Gilly; and to Brisbane to see Andy's cousins, Larry and Julie). We're currently enjoying a weekend off (!) in Christchurch - doing no real sightseeing and living it up in a studio flat (instead of our tent).
Since our last blog we've done some more hiking, this time in the Aoraki Mountains (Mount Cook area). We climbed up 1km to just shy of 2,000m to stay the night in the Mueller mountain hut. There were snowy mountains and glaciers all around and the boom of avalanches 2-3 times an hour. We both agree that our time here was probably the highlight of our NZ tour.
Another 'top three' type of moment was seeing six sperm whales over a two-hour period from a whale-watching boat in Kaikoura. Apparently there is a canyon in the sea floor just off the coast here where the sea bed drops to 800m+. The whales dive down for food spending 40 mins or so under water before coming up spouting for air. There were also NZ fur seals and dolphins to be seen in the bays along the coast from the car - beautiful.
