Indonesia is now behind us and we are currently in the jungle of northern Borneo with thunderstorms rolling around us. We arrived in Sabah part of the Malaysian part of borneo six days ago after an overnight in Singapore, which was very westernised after Indonesia, and had our temperatures checked at the airports because of swine flu risks. Sabah's capital city, Kota Kinabalu, or KK as it's known locally, was busy and surprisingly developed, but once outside the capital the road snaked its way through the sparsely populated jungle-covered mountains and hills on our 5.5 hour bus ride. On a short jungle trek today near Sandakan we experienced our first up-close and personal encounter with leeches (disgusting) and saw two orang-utans feeding (amazing). We are travelling with an English couple we met in Java, Emma & Jay. Tomorrow we all head off for an overnight river trip where we hope to spot more wildlife.
