Two days ago we finally said farewell to Emma and Jay, with whom we've been travelling for about seven weeks (they went north, while we went south). We had lots of laughs and some excellent jungly adventures. We were also the honoured and only guests at their engagement party last Saturday! We are now in Melaka in SW Malaysia experiencing some excellent food and learning more about the historical significance of the Malay, Chinese, Portuguese and Indian inhabitants. The next 8 days will be spent in and around the Kuala Lumpur area before heading off to Cambodia.
Following our arrival in Peninsular Malaysia we initially saw some intriguing reminders of Penang's colonial and Chinese history. We then moved on to the Cameron Highlands, the mountainous area in the mid-north of the country. The climate there was similar to a really hot summer's day in the UK, which was just fantastic. We climbed, pulled and trekked our way up to the highest peak (2,100m) and meandered down through the tea plantations. We also took a tour to some of the rather British occupations such as a rose garden, strawberry farm and apiary; as well as an insect and butterfly centre and a tea plantation.
Latterly we were jungle trekking again, this time in Taman Negara in the east of Malaysia which claims to be one of the oldest jungles in the world (130 million years); the trees were certainly really dwarfing. Consequently the 500m canopy walkway comprising swinging boards and netting circa 40 meters up was pretty impressive. As ever on the trail we met the dreaded leeches, but also quite a few birds and a snake. On our 2-hour boat trip out of the jungle we also saw monkeys, kingfishers and a giant hornbill.
