We've made it to Bali! Yesterday we weren't too sure what was going to happen as the flight from Flores to Bali was cancelled with no information available. But Transnusa airlines came good today and we're now supping beer and uploading this blog and some photos.
The four-day boat trip between Lombok and Flores was great. The scenery was stunning - green mountains and hills with sporadic villages, their wooden stilted houses clinging to the shores. For most of the time we were following the coast of Sumbawa (the large island between Lombok and Flores) and weaving our way through the archipelago of small uninhabited islands. The boat was pretty basic; when we weren't snorkling, we spent our days sprawling on the deck (there weren't any chairs!) reading and chatting with the 14 other passengers. The sleeping deck had an awning above it, but was open to the elements which meant a lovely cooling breeze at night. The hardest things, literally, were the mattresses which were about 1cm thick.
The highlight was seeing the Komodo Dragons - the 2-3 metre long giant monitor lizards that only inhabit two islands in the world - Komodo and Rinca. We visited both islands and saw 19 of the beasts in all. The rangers have wooden sticks that they use to prevent attacks on humans ... and we certainly saw quite a bit of panic at one point as one lizard made a bee-line towards our party and some people had a few war wounds as a result of the shoving and running that went on to scarper.
