Our exploration of downtown LA has been limited as both of us have spent time here previously; the Getty Centre was a highlight though. The building itself and the gardens surrounding it were fascinating. It's perched on top of a couple of hills overlooking Santa Monica Bay, and because the weather has been so wonderful (70-80 degrees) and the air clear, we could see over 20 miles.
Red Rock Canyon 100 miles north of LA, was another highlight. It's out in the Mojave desert. The Canyon is made of sandstone but it has eroded at different rates and formed beautiful shapes. We were also the only people there which made the experience even more evocative. The elevation of the desert is already quite high at 2,500 ft, but we ended up driving above 5,000 ft through the snowy foothills of Mount Whitney (which is a towering 14,000 ft).
Today we've been out to Pasadena, west of LA. The Huntington Museum there has some great art works, but also a wonderful botanic garden. The cacti garden was the best part.
Other that this, we've been hanging out with Fran's brother and his friends, watching DVDs, eating meals (some of which are blowing our budget) and enjoying not working! We've also been going into our message board daily and it's been great to have so many comments from you all - thank you!
