Hola From South America!
Arrived safely in Chile a couple of weeks ago. We stayed in the capital, Santiago, for a few nights. Had barely touched down and were scammed straight away out of some money by the locals! Needlesstosay our efforts in learning Spanish didnt do much good!! Hardly anyone speaks a word of English here. We've now resorted to pointing to our phrasebook or speaking in Spanglish (saying English words with a Spanish accent) haha. We've also figured out that if we stand looking puzzled with a massive map for anout ten minutes someone who can speak English will notice us and offer to help!! We made another minor mistake in the first day too...after the 12 hour flight we slept the whole following day til 6 o'clock which made us nocturnal for the rest of the week!
Anyway, we didn't like Santiago that much and it was a bit of a culture shock after New Zealand which is set up for tourists. We headed north for the Atacama desert and stayed in San Pedro. It took us 25 hours on a bus to get there sat amongst the locals who stole our food!!!. We really liked it at San Pedro. It is a little remote village in the middle of the desert where 'water is like gold'- or at least that is what we were told every time we asked to have a shower! A chilean guide who we met on the bus showed us round for three days. He was really knowledgeable and spoke perfect English too which was music to our ears!Plenty of Kodak moments..visited geysers, salt flats and flamingoes.
After that it was time to cross the border to Argentina. The sniffer dog sniffed out Rhians bag ( and only Rhians bag) out of the whole bus much to her dismay. She was then questionned and sniffed for ten minutes along with her bag in full view of the bus. They didnt find anything of course!...remains a mystery to us! funny though!
We stayed in Salta for a few nights which is a beautiful city in Northern Argentina. Saw a few of the sights and walks around the area. The food here is amazing!!! Loads of steak and chicken which is the best we've all ever tasted and it is never anymore than three quid! sooooooo cheap thankfully!
Arrived in Buenos Aires yesterday and just got back form a city tour. The shops look fab! Going to watch a tango show in a mo and got tickets to see Boca Juniors v Lanus on Sunday which we are really excited about! we drove past boca stadium today and there were fans outside going mental and there hasn't even been a match today...they are football crazy over here!
Exactly four weeks left as of today. We'll be spending the last three weeks in Brazil. All missing home now but sure we'll be getting the plane home before we know it.
cant wait to see you all. ciao for now! thanks for the emails!!!
