Test Run
The very important decision to purchase a stamp from Stanley Gibbons on The Strand was made this morning & we spent quite a while looking through the affordable collection of Penny Blacks - the very first stamp ever! We had been surprised that there were even any for sale but apparently they were very common & affordable in 1840 so there are plenty still around. They don't cost a Penny anymore though! Geoff is now the proud owner of one so we just have to get it home without bending it! A great afternoon spent among the art in the National Gallery where we chose to just see the most recent work from 18th - 20th century. Despite being crowded, the paintings were very easy to view & we found it a pleasure to see such a complex mixture of artists from Canaletto to Constable, Turner, Monet & Van Gogh. Outside in Trafalgar Square there were hundreds of people enjoying the sun, the fountains, the buskers & climbing over the lions on their plinths. Early dinner in the very affordable Crypt of St Martins in the Fields then to the nearby Garrick theatre to see 12 Angry Men with several famous actors including Tom Conti, Robert Vaughn & William Gaminara (Leo from Silent Witness). It's a great bonus to see familiar faces here live on stage - makes me feel again that London is the centre of the world.
