Test Run
Headed west today across mountain passes & along valleys dotted with farms, sheep, horses & waterfalls. In Icelandic "Foss" means waterfall so because Geoff is very keen on them he has become "fossboy", an in-joke with us fourherrings who've given him numerous nicknames over the years. First Foss we found rushing down a hillside just beside the road so climbed up the narrow tricky path for a closer look & a friendly tourist took our photo. Drove across the vast gravel plateau in the centre of the country where there wasn't even any grass - a barren moonlike landscape, flat & rocky with snow capped peaks far away. This strange area led us to the most amazing waterfall of Detifoss - Europe's most powerful & walking through the rocky path towards it you can see the mist & hear the roar long before you see the water. The water is grey with sediment so it blends with the surrounding rocks but moves with such force & power that it's almost frightening. Once again I was struck by how natural the whole area was - no formal paths, no guard rails & just one tiny sign with a warning about slipping. Iceland is different to Australia in this way & it's quite refreshing to not have over regulation - sensible behavior is left to the common sense of the individual. This may not always work but we didn't see anyone being stupid - it's too dangerous! We spent a long time beside this awesome sight & also walked upstream for a view of Selfoss falls - same water but smaller drop so quite different. Ended the day in the volcanic region of Lake Myvatn & visited a steaming mud pool & lava formations. This country continues to surprise & amaze us!
