Test Run
Short stop for supplies in supermarket in Vik & visit to the little church as we'd promised we would. Peter from the church in Ebrington, Cotswolds has created a world wide link of churches & this is one of them. Set off across the vast black sand plains & stopped at another area filled with stone cairns created by travellers for good fortune on their journey. The black sand gave way to ancient lava fields, the largest ever & now covered in moss & lichen with an eerie green color & lovely soft spongy feel. This area is overlooked by Katla volcano under an enormous glacier which is actually overdue for an eruption & had a warning of activity published today! Beyond this huge expanse was another strange landscape of black sand plain which was created in another volcanic eruption in 1996 when thousands of tons of water & ice flooded over a huge area, washing away the main highway & twisting several steel bridges like plastic. Just past here we started to see glaciers - not just one or two but probably at least 10 so I was beside myself. There is something wonderful about these fantastic creations that I have an affinity with & I feel so grateful to have been lucky enough to see them in several countries. This was beyond my wildest dreams though & to stop for lunch beside the road with a close view of two glaciers side by side was wonderful. From sublime to divine as we next found the beautiful Fjallsarlon glacier lagoon with a heart shaped glacier on one side & the main one behind a small lagoon. This was a special place - not too many people, so quiet & peaceful & so beautiful. We both took far too many photos but also just sat quietly enjoying being in that place. Next along the road was the fabulous and famous Jokulsarlon lagoon filled with icebergs which make their way out to sea & get washed ashore on the black sand. We did a boat tour of a small area of the lagoon & got quite close to some of the icebergs. The highlight for me was actually a walk on the sand to see the waves breaking up the ice & the beautiful contrast in colour in the late afternoon light. A truly magic day that had me smiling.
