Test Run
One night in Juneau before our cruise gave us 2 half days to explore this surprising little city. It's more like a ski resort town than a state capital & has a nice untouched feel - small, pretty, friendly & interesting. After flying in over snow capped mountains we approached the airport along the Gastineau Channel coming very low over the water. The "must do" in Juneau was a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier which is quite close to town & we walked along the trail towards the glacier where the Nugget Falls come pouring down. This location was a perfect spot for "Foss Boy" & "Glacier Girl" - side by side & quite impressive. Wandered around the gift stores & Geoff found himself a gorgeous alpaca jumper & I bought a little pink jade inukshuk to go with my collection. People everywhere were commenting on the unusual warm weather & constant sunshine - very rare here. Great dinner at Salt restaurant. Sunday morning checked our bags in for the cruise then went up the Mt Roberts Gondola to the peak above Juneau for several hours exploring the nature trail, enjoying the view & learning a bit about the area. Had bald eagles & ravens circling overhead - a good omen, as these are the spirit birds of the local Thingit native peoples. Wandered along the wharf where several large cruise ships made an interesting contrast to our small "Safari Endeavour".
