So following our quick 6 day stop off in London to see family and wash (Lordy did we need washing!), we set off on the next part of our trip - Central America.. First stop Mexico!!!
We arrived in Mexico City last friday night absolutely delerious we were so tired. A ´suspect package´ on london underground and then a fault with our plane (i know!!) turned what was supposed to be a 10 hour journey into a 19 hour pain in the ass. Our Saviour in the form of my friend from Boston, Ale was at the airport to pick us up and drive us to her place to stay for a couple of days. We arrived at her house to be greeted by possibly the cutest animals ever to exist. Freya, Buda and Loki are Ale´s 3 hairless (yes, they have NO hair!!) cats and Faye and I instantly fell in love with them. Faye has every morning since, woken up and insisted we get a hairless cat... Anyways, we got settled into Ale´s beautiful home in San Jeronimo on the east side of Mexico City with the intention of having 1 beer and off to bed. Well.... Ale being Ale (for you Boston friends reading, she has not changed!) and you all know Faye.. 1 beer turned into 8 tequilas and all of a sudden it was 2:30am and Faye and I were moving to Mexico to live with Ale and the 3 hairless cats!!
Needless to say we eventually passed out cold and woke up the following morning with slight hangovers.. Ale informed us that food and beer were the only hope of curing our heads. As you know Faye and I arent the daytime drinking types (!!) but we both agreed, when in Rome.... We all bundled in the car and headed to a local Mexican place where we feasted on Chiliquiles* (Tortillas, smothered in guac, refried beans, cheese etc) and Michilada ´s (Mexican beer poured over a lime and salt mix - delicious!) .
We spent the rest of the day touring around Mexico City on one of those open top things I have always laughed at in London. I will never laugh again as it was such a great way to see all the sights and they even had head phones explaining everything in English so we didnt annoy Ale as much as we could have. Mexico City is SO different to what we had thought. Its massive for one thing. It can literally take 3 hours to get from one side to the other, and thats provided there is no traffic. Its also a beautiful city with pretty buildings, and palm tree lined streets, all of which you can see for yourself once we post our damn photos (which will be very soon!).
That evening after a quick change we headed into town to have some drinks/food. One of Ale´s friends Mario , now one of our friends because he is an absolute legend! - took us to this great little taco place in town, and I kid you not we had the best bloody taco´s a human has ever eaten! Ale is Mexican and she even agrees! Faye, as usual, had eyes much bigger than her belly and over ordered by like twice the amount. She ploughed through however, credit to her but unfortunately was to spend the next 3 hours suffering the after effects - and trying to convince everyone it was jetlag! The four of us and Suzanna, another of Ale´s awesome friends that is now ours, went to a newly opened club in the city. It turnes out its a music venue and had so many similarities to The Lexington it was scary! They even had Vivian Girls playing on stage when we arrived! As I mentioned before, Faye was having some difficulties in staying awake following her buffet style dinner, so at 2am we decided we should call it a night and get some much needed rest. This was when Faye and Ale had an ingenious idea to finish off the night with a shot of Tequila. Have you ever known a night to FINISH after the first shot of tequila???? No, neither have I, and neither did our night!!!! Not to go into more detail than is necessary, we ended up staying at the bar until 7am and then headed to a house party with a bunch of Mexicans who had names like Hairs and Masala, and arrived home at a very unsavoury hour the following day.
The almighty hangover that followed this night meant that we stayed in Mexico City a day longer than planned. We spent the day just chilling with the hairless cats and laughing at Ale trying to get some work done. As faye and I ´´no hablo espanol´´ Ale also spent her day being our mother, sending us to the shop with written notes on what to buy and booking us cabs and hostels . Faye made us a beautiful dinner in the evening and we all got a very respectful early night . We had to leave by 7am the next morning to head to our next Mexican location - Oaxaca
