We awoke early in Ocotal to get a 5 hour bus to Managua and then to jump on another 1 hour bus to Granada ready to settle for a few days over Christmas.
We ate chicken paste sandwichs for breakfast on the bus (well thats what they told us it was) and arrived Granada for around lunchtime.
The city was beautiful, without a doubt the nicest we have seen during our travels. The town looks very similar to something you would find in Europe. We walked around in 40 degree heat with backpacks on trying to find somewhere to stay and finally decided that we wanted to stay somewhere nice for Christmas as we were missing our families and had a rubbish few days of travel. We decided upon a beautiful 5 star hotel right in the centre. We had a king size bed, air conditioning, a balcony overlooking the city and the volcano and a swimming pool. We were in our element. To top it off there was an Irish bar opposite the hotel so Michelle was very pleased!
We spent Christmas here with a great Christmas dinner, plenty of wine and even a couple of Christmas pressies that my sister Sally had given to us before we went away and told us not to open. (Bless her)
On Christmas day we went on a boat trip around the islands (365 of them all formed from an erruption 20,000 years ago) on Lake Nicaragua and drank coconuts. And then sat by the pool at the hotel drinking pina coladas.
On Boxing Day we went on a cold Volcano hike of Mombacho Volcano and then on a Canopy Tour. I spent all day with my face pointing upwards in search of a sloth and gutted with a major neck ache that I didnt so much as get a wiff of one. We also visited a local coffee plantation to see how the coffee was made, they apparently had ran out of coffee (can you believe it) though so didnt get a chance to sample the produce.
On Boxing day night we moved out of our hotel back into a lovely little, cheap hostel. Treats over and back to reality. We then got ready for out 5.30 am bus back to Managua to catch our 8.00 am bus from there to San Jose, Costa Rica!
