So after another short nights sleep, we were up early for a tour of Kanchanaburi, just outside of Bangkok.
We booked the tour the night before, so I was a little apprehensive of what we would get - would it be one of those horror stories that you hear about or did we book with a decent company. Luckily, we had a lovely aircon mini van and a very friendly driver named Pong!
We headed off out of the city towards Kanachanburi. First stop was the Allied War Cemetery. This is a memorial to the 16,000 POW's who died during the construction of the railway. There were different areas for the people who died - section for the Dutch, Australians and the Brits.
Next stop was the Jeath Museum, which had some of the artifacts found from the Japanese occupation. Was a cute museum and gave some insite to what people when through during their POW time. Next headed down to the bridge over the River Kwai which was quite interesting - only the curve bits are the original on the bridge, the rest was rebuilt after the bombing of the bridge in 1945.
Next we had a trip on the "Death train", was on there for an hour and was ok - saw some beautiful secenary but by this time I was getting a little hungry. Met some Frech people on the train - they were quite nice but one of them got charged 80bhat for a can of beer! Poor guy didn't seem to understand the difference between the way the lady pronnounced 18 and 80.
After the train, had some lunch at a local thai cafe, had this great stir fry made of oyster mushrooms, then fresh pineapple.
Next stop was the bit that I had been looking forward most to - the elephant trek. This was really fun, a bit painful on my legs as the bar was digging into the back of them. The elephants were so docile! We had a little girl elephant. After that we headed back to the river, to go on the bamboo raft. Before getting to the rafts, we had to cross a wooden rope bridge - the kind that you see in and Indian Jones movie that always snaps! Some of the boards were broken but I managed to cross it without falling into the river. The bamboo raft was nice and chilled out, just floated down stream for a while.
Last stop of the day was the Sai Yok Noi Waterfall which was really nice. We did seem to have walked into a modelling shoot as all the women (and some of the men) were posing a lot. One of the ladies ended up slipping down part of the waterfall, and hurting her bum -serves her right for wearing a thong bikini!
We headed home after that and now, going for food and an early night!
