Day Five in Dresden: Motto for this leg is "nothing is as it seems"...not that we are disappointed, but things in Berlin are great because it is in Berlin, Germany's largest city and it's once and future capital. Dresden is in the former East Germany, but does not get the attention that Berlin gets, got and will get, so it is still showing signs of it's recent past under communism.
The Elbe river is beautiful, and so is the newly re-built Frauenkirche (finished in 2005). Our hotel is beautiful as well, very much a park-like resort spa setting. The rest of the city feels like a "red-headed step child" with graphiti everywhere, many broken down and dilapidated buildings, and overall, showing as we said signs of the recent past. The rebuilt "old town" is amazing, as much of the sandstone baroque architecture still shows signs of the 1945 fire-bombing which destroyed so much of this once glorious city. We will post more photos tomorrow, as today was about travel, checkin and dinner downtown. I hope the pictures we take tomorrow do this beautiful and complex place justice.
