Days Seven and Eight (Aug. 4/5 2007)We arrived after an overnight train from Dresden at about 10:00am and took a taxi (another 14 euros?gone) to the Intercontinental Hotel. What a beautiful place. The grounds of the Hotel are in Obersaltzberg, which is up (literally UP) the road from Berchtesgaden. The road UP is actually the steepest road in all of Germany with an average grade of 23 degrees (for you engineering majors). The hotel itself is built on the property of the old Berghof property which Hitler called home during the 1930s and 40s. The hotel stands on the top of a hill which was used for outdoor picnicking during that time and is within a few yards of where some pretty famous (or infamous) people had their summer homes. In terms of the scenery, you could not ask for a more beautiful area. It is a combination of Yosemite, Mammoth, and Lake Tahoe all rolled into one, and without the millions of tourists. We are also taking great advantage of our time at this five star resort (thanks, Carol!) to recover from the past week's travels. On the fifth, we visited downtown Berchtesgaden and also the Kehlsteinhaus which many people in America refer to as Hitler's Eagle's Nest. This building was spared the bombing raids in 1945 and stands atop a cliff almost 2000 ft above the Intercontinental Hotel. Needless to say neither words nor pictures can adequately describe the beauty of this place. You will just have to plan a trip here yourself!Pictures to follow (Microsoft and Vista permitting!)P.S. Finally got some photos up, check it out. Took one for Heidi!Ken & Linda - du bist verukt neighbors J love my english/german blendsTHanks for checking in
