Hi Chaps,
Time for another update. I'm having a real mare with this website. I keeping typing in details for my last place at the new place, so it comes up where I am now as opposed to where I've been, if that makes any sense. Nevermind.
My travelling companions, Matt, Michelle and I roared into Airlie beach on the 29th Oct. Staying in Bush Village in little shacks, just outside Airlie was a nice change and we were able to get shuttle buses into town. Those that have been here before will know that there's not much in town except bars and lots of pisshead English students. We all went to the Outer Great Barrier Reef on the 31st where we anchored at Hardy Reef to snorkel over the reef all day. Bloody brilliant. Saw loads of different fish, most of which were massive. I took loads of underwater shots which have hopefully come out ok as I've yet to get them processed. We had a tour of the whitsundays on the 31st thrown in for free as part of the package, so hit Hamilton Island first which we sped round on a golf buggy for a couple of hours, and then chilled out on Whitehaven Beach which is the nice one off all the tour brochures. White sand and turquoise water. Magic!!. Played Frisbee and volleyball with some fit foreigners, who no doubt marvelled at my six pack.
We decided to get down to Hervey bay, our next stop, on the overnight bus which left at 11:50pm and got to Hervey at 1:00pm, a long old trip. I hardly slept on the bus so was knackered once I got there. The place we've been staying at is magic. It's like a little apartment with your own kitchen, lounge, bathroom, etc, so all three of us have really chilled out here. On the 2nd we caught the last whale watching trip to catch sight of the last of the humpback whales migrating up the coast. We were lucky enough to see two of them, a mother and calf and they were leaping out the water like they do on the telly. I managed to get a couple of action shots, which I'll stick on the site once I find a place with faster internet access. We saw a couple of dolphins, turtles and even a lone dingo walking down Fraser Island beach, which was pretty cool.
After a couple more days of chilling back at the bay, and a bike ride round the town, we got involved with the Melbourne cup. It's like our grand national, where the whole of Oz stops and everyone hits the pub to watch the race. We had a do in the local Irish Bar (Hoolihans) with food and entertainment laid on. I got involved in a mock race with toy horses and dice. The guy threw the dice to select the horse and then again to advance you down the track. Not surprisingly he never threw my number and so did'nt even leave the starting blocks and so lost miserably. Again, not surprisingly all three of my horses failed to come in on the race, so again did'nt win anything. Rubbish. Still I managed to get really hammered, so it turned out too be a fun day.
Sailed across to Fraser Island on the 8th for a 3 day 4x4 self drive adventure which was great. I'll let you know about that later as I'm running out of time on t'internet.
Take care guys.
